‘Chlo ji ap bhi khel lo 14 Oct ko’ – Fans react as latest reports provide key update on Shubman Gill’s availability for India’s upcoming World Cup matches
A slight relief for Team India ahead of their high-octane clash against arch-rivals Pakistan. Star opener Shubman Gill, who was down due to dengue, will reportedly leave for Ahmedabad on Wednesday (October 11) as he undergoes treatment. The rest of the Indian team is currently in Delhi for their match against Afghanistan, but Gill stayed back in Chennai to recuperate.
According to reports, Gill will take a commercial flight from Chennai to Ahmedabad, where he will continue to heal and rest. “Gill will take a commercial flight from Chennai to Ahmedabad today. Under the supervision of the BCCI medical team, he will continue to heal and rest there,” a source close to developments told News18.
The 24-year-old had been suffering from high fever since landing in Chennai and tested positive for dengue. He was hospitalised in the Tamil Nadu capital after his platelet count dropped below 1,00,000 but he recovered quickly and was discharged within a day. The right-handed batter, who missed India’s opening match against Australia, has also been ruled out of the encounter against Afghanistan.
Will Gill be fit to play against Pakistan on October 14?
Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour also confirmed Gill’s hospitalisation at a pre-match press conference in Delhi on 10 October. The coach was also optimistic that “hopefully Gill will be back in the mix pretty soon”. While the latest updates have not given a clear picture of when Gill will be back on the field, there is a slim chance of him playing against Pakistan on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
“Gill’s vital signs are improving and he is on the right path of recovery – 70-80% recovered. Difficult to say when he will return but things are looking good,” says the source.
Meanwhile, in Gill’s absence, left-handed batter Ishan Kishan will continue to open alongside captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday. Kishan has been in good form recently but failed to shine on his World Cup debut against Australia. He was dismissed for a golden duck by left-arm Mitchell Starc in the first over of the second innings. However, India managed to beat the five-time champions by six wickets, thanks to the record partnership between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.
Here’s how fans reacted to reports of Shubman Gill travelling to Ahmedabad on Wednesday:
