‘Captaincy nahi stat-padding chhodni chahiye’ – Fans react as Babar Azam quits captaincy in all formats following Pakistan’s poor run in ODI World Cup 2023
Babar Azam, the captain of the Pakistan cricket team, has decided to step down from his leadership role in all formats following Pakistan’s disappointing campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023. The decision comes on the heels of Pakistan’s underwhelming performance in the tournament, where they failed to advance to the semi-finals.
Babar, known for his elegant batting and leadership skills, faced immense scrutiny as Pakistan struggled to find their footing in the ODI World Cup. In a statement, Babar thanked the Pakistan Cricket Board for showing trust in him and giving him an amazing opportunity to serve as the team’s captain.
“I vividly remember the moment when I received a call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world.
Reaching the number one spot in the white-ball format was a result of the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management but I’d like to express my gratitude to passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey.” Babar tweeted.
I feel it is the right time for this call: Babar Azam
However, this move opens a new chapter in Pakistan cricket as the team will now be on the lookout for a new captain to guide the team. Babar, while relinquishing the captaincy, remains a pivotal figure in the team’s batting lineup, and his focus will likely shift to contributing as a key player on the field.
“Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is the right time for this call. I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication. I want to express my sincere thanks to the Pakistan Cricket Board for entrusting me with this significant responsibility.” he added.
