The first semi-final of the 2023 World Cup unfolded with a dazzling exhibition of batting brilliance at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15, headlined by India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, a key figure in Team India’s formidable lineup. Iyer’s exceptional performance saw him crafting a splendid century against New Zealand, marking his second three-figure score in the ongoing World Cup.

The match commenced with India taking charge from the very first over, setting the Kiwis on the defensive. A brilliant catch by Kane Williamson dismissed India’s captain who smashed 47 runs off just 29 balls, providing New Zealand a momentary respite.

However, the dynamic duo of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli took the reins, with Gill adopting an aggressive approach, allowing Kohli to find his rhythm. Gill’s impressive innings came to a halt when he retired hurt at 79, succumbing to the scorching Mumbai heat. This setback, however, paved the way for a monumental partnership between Kohli and Iyer.

Brilliant partnership between Kohli and Iyer

The duo showcased impeccable synergy, accumulating boundaries consistently and sustaining the momentum. Both Kohli and Iyer reached their respective centuries, with Kohli achieving a historic milestone by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar with his 50th ODI hundred. The Wankhede Stadium erupted in celebration as cricket fans witnessed this monumental feat unfold on the grand stage.

The Kohli-Iyer partnership became the cornerstone of India’s innings, with both batters complementing each other’s strengths. Iyer, in particular, showcased his power-hitting prowess, dispatching towering sixes with ease. Iyer departed after a wonderful 105-run knock off just 70 balls which included 4 fours and 8 sixes. As the innings progressed, KL Rahul joined the onslaught, contributing to the team’s mammoth total.

With relentless scoring and an array of powerful strokes, India concluded their innings at an imposing 397 runs. Iyer’s second consecutive century, coupled with Kohli’s historic milestone, left fans and cricket enthusiasts in awe of the team’s commanding performance in the semi-final.
