‘Aise hi jeet te raho shero’ – Fans react as India beat Australia in first ODI by 5 wickets in Mohali

The first match of the 3-match ODI series between India and Australia was played at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Friday, September 22. The Men in Blue displayed a brilliant all-round performance and started the series on a positive note by winning the contest by 5 wickets.

Talking about the match, India skipper KL Rahul, who is named as the captain of the team for the first two matches, opted to bowl first. The decision proved right Mohammed Shami sent the dangerous batter Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion in the 3rd ball of the innings.

However, David Warner and Steve Smith used their experience and stitched a brilliant partnership of 94 runs for the 2nd wicket. India’s star allrounder Ravindra Jadeja provided the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Warner on 52 runs in the 19th over. Smith also went back after scoring 41 runs in the 22nd over by Shami.

Brilliant batting performance by Indian openers

All the upcoming batters got great starts to their innings but none of them was able to convert them into a big one. Due to this, the Kangaroos were restricted on the score of 276 runs. Josh Inglis and skipper Pat Cummins displayed some big shots in the end but those were not enough for them to cross the 300-run mark. Shami shone with a brilliant five-wicket haul.

Chasing the target, Indian openers Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad provided a cracking start to the team as they stitched a massive 142-run stand for the first wicket. Gill scored 74 runs which included 6 fours and 2 sixes while Gaikwad departed after scoring 71 runs smashing 10 fours.

Shreyas Iyer came to bat at no. 3 and got run out on just 3 runs. However, the set was already set for the successful chase as Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav made a match-winning partnership of 80 runs for the 5th wicket and helped the team to win the first match of the series.
