‘Ab toh sharam karle Rohit Sharma’ – Fans react as David Warner announces his retirement from ODIs for Australia
A sad news has come for cricket fans in the New Year of 2024. David Warner has announced his retirement from ODIs. The move comes from the Southpaw to concentrate on T20 cricket. Given the fact that he has aged well in his long career and that the youngsters are waiting for their chances to play for Australia, Warner has decided to retire from the format.
David Warner has ended his career as one of the finest ODI batters of all time. The star batter has been a mainstay for Australia for more than 12 years and helped them win 2 ODI World Cups, something not many cricketers have done. In 2015 and 2023, Warner helped Australia to win the ODI WC, which is considered to be the biggest prize in world cricket. Warner has hit many 100s against some of the best teams in the world.
While Warner was not at his best in the format till 2015, his numbers since then have been phenomenal. From 2009 to 2014, Warner averaged just 31.41 with the bat and stroked at 83.51. His numbers have seen a massive shift since 2015. In the last 9 years, the star batter has scored 5393 runs in 110 innings at a batting average of 51.86, at a batting SR of 102.06, including 20 hundreds and 23 fifties.
Great performer on the grand stage
Warner always stepped up in big tournaments. In the ODI WC, Warner performed well for Australia. In the 2019 ODI WC, Warner was the second-highest run-scorer, just a run short behind Rohit Sharma. In the tournament, the star batter scored 647 runs at an average of 71.89, at a strike rate of 89.36, including 3 hundred and fifties each. These are very good numbers in a WC edition.
In the recently concluded ODI WC 2023, Warner was very good as well. In 11 innings, Warner scored 535 runs at a batting average of 48.63, at a batting strike rate of 108.30, including 2 hundred and fifties each. Australia would miss the services of their star batter who was a mainstay in the side for a long time. Fans would miss the entertainment he provided in the field.
