‘Yeh bahut khatarnak team he’ – Fans react to South Africa’s yet another thumping win in 2023 ODI World Cup, beat Bangladesh by 149 runs

Another day, another massive win for South Africa. Their latest victim was Bangladesh, who suffered a massive 200-run defeat at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, October 24. A few days back, defending champions England were demolished at the same venue after they posted a mammoth total, and today the story was no different.

After opting to bat first, South Africa finished with a mammoth 382 – the first team to register three 350-plus scores in a single World Cup edition. Bangladesh had got off to a decent start, reducing opponents to 36/2 inside 8 overs. Opener Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram then stitched a brilliant partnership to bring them back into the game.

However, things were under control of Shakib Al Hasan and his team until the dismissal of Markram (60 off 69) in the 31st over. It all turned in South Africa’s favour when the last match centurion Heinrich Klaasen joined hands with de Kock. The wicket-keeper batter soon brought up his third century of the tournament and shifted to the top gear.

Carnage from both ends and the Bangladesh bowlers had no clue where to bowl. De Kock (174 off 140) looked like he would score a double century, while Klaasen (90 off 49) looked all set to smash successive centuries. However, both did not happen because of pacer Hasan Mahmud. David Miller’s 15-ball 34 provided the finishing touch as the Proteas hammered 144 off the last 10 overs.

Mahmudullah’s century was the only thing for Bangladesh to cheer about

The game was done and dusted in the first half itself. South African batters made the job easier for their bowlers. Marco Jansen drew first blood by removing their opener Tanzid Hasan. With Najmul Hossain Shanto and skipper Shakib Al Hasan failing to make an impact, Bangladesh were reduced to 31/3 inside 8 overs.

Lizaad Williams, Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee also posed a threat by picking up wickets at regular intervals. The only thing for the Tigers to cheer about was their veteran Mahmudullah’s brilliant century with the support of the tail-enders. While everyone else failed to touch the 25-run mark, the 37-year-old smashed 111 runs, which helped them reduce the margin of defeat. However, still, the Proteas won by a massive margin after bowling out Bangladesh for 233 in the 47th over.
