New Zealand started their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign with 4 back-to-back wins and looked like they were set to overcome the mistake they made during the 2019 ODI World Cup. However, after a brilliant start, they lost 3 consecutive matches and now the path for them to qualify for the semi-finals have become difficult.

One of the reasons behind their bad run in the tournament is the absence of their regular skipper Kane Williamson who injured his thumb during the Blackcaps’ 3rd match of the tournament. Meanwhile, recently, Williamson was spotted practising in the nets ahead of the crucial clash against Pakistan at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, November 3.

We’ll control the things that we can control: Daryl Mitchell

Meanwhile, New Zealand star allrounder, Daryl Mitchell, emphasises the Kiwi philosophy of staying grounded and focusing on the process rather than outcomes. He highlights that injuries are beyond their control, and the team’s primary goal is to represent their country with pride. Winning games is important, but the key is sticking to what they do best and controlling the controllable factors. This approach has served the Black Caps well for years, and they remain committed to their methods.

“One thing we do as Kiwis is we stay pretty grounded. We stay where our feet are, and injuries are things that we can’t control. All I know is that the 11 guys that will take the field will be very proud to represent our country. We won’t make it bigger than what it is. It’s another two points for this tournament,”

“You play to win games of cricket but for us, it’s about making sure we do what we do best. We’re not outcome-focused. We never will be. We’ll control the things that we can control. And that stuff will take care of itself if we keep doing our jobs. That’s what we do as Black Caps and as Kiwis and it seems to have worked for a number of years now and we’ll just keep doing what we do and see what happens,” Mitchell was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
