In the US Open 2023 quarterfinals, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain convincingly defeated Alexander Zverev. He won the match 6-3, 6-2, and 6-4 in straight sets. The Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York served as the venue for the game on September 6. The two players’ supporters as well as tennis lovers in general filled the court to capacity.

However, there was one recognisable Indian face in the crowd who was sitting behind the 2023 Wimbledon champion. We’re referring to MS Dhoni, the current captain of the Chennai Super Kings and a former legendary captain of India. Dhoni is currently on holiday in the USA and chose to attend the Men’s Singles quarterfinal at the US Open while he was there.

Zebrev who lost the match, talked about his performance in the post-match interview and said that even though he lost the first set but he thought that it’d be a competitive game. However, he was completely dominated by Alcaraz as he defeated him with ease and straight sets.

“(If) I could have broken, it could have gone my way. It didn’t,” Zverev said about that key segment in the match’s seventh game. “Even though I lost the first set, I thought it was going to be a competitive match. I thought my level was there. I thought his level was there. I thought it was going to be a fun one.”

MS Dhoni wanted Piyush Chawla instead of Rohit Sharma: Raja Venkat

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is set to lead the Indian team in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. However, the right-hander missed the 2011 ODI World Cup after Dhoni picked up Piyush Chawla in place of him. Former selector Raja Venkat recently revealed why Dhoni picked up Chawla over Rohit.

“When we sat to select the team, Rohit was very much in the scheme of things. So when we were selecting the team, from 1-14, everything was accepted. [For] No. 15, we suggested the name of Rohit Sharma. Gary Kirsten felt it was a perfect selection but again, the captain wanted a change there.

MS Dhoni wanted Piyush Chawla instead of Rohit Sharma. So immediately Gary Kirsten somersaulted and he said, ‘No, I think that’s the better choice.’ So that’s how Rohit Sharma got left out,” Venkat was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
