WATCH: Mitchell Marsh gets emotional during his speech after winning Allan Border medal in Australian Awards 2024

Mitchell Marsh has been recognized by Cricket Australia for his performance in the year 2023. The star All-Rounder was brilliant in the year 2023 across formats and helped Australia win the ODI WC 2023. In Tests, Marsh played a brilliant hand in the last three Tests of the away Ashes in England.

Marsh got better votes (223) than the star batter Steve Smith (144) and Australian skipper Pat Cummins (141) to emerge as the winner. The vote share shows how dominant Marsh has been on his way to winning the award. Marsh spoke after winning the award. He felt that the emergence of Cameron Green made him believe that his career was over.

“It’s obviously a huge honor. Cameron Green is a pretty imposing figure, so I thought I was done and dusted. I spoke to my wife [Greta] often about wanting to get one more crack at it, and it’s been amazing,” said Marsh while speaking about his performances as a player for Australia in the year 2023.

Marsh thanked his family for being supportive of him. The star cricketer felt that he was loved a lot by the people in the last year or so. The younger Marsh added that the news of him winning the medal was revealed through one of his teammates and added that he could not believe what was revealed.

“I’m extremely thankful. I have a beautiful family; they’ve been so supportive. There’s no doubt over the last 12-18 months, I’ve felt a lot of love. One of my friends sent me the list [of winners] today … I can’t believe it,” added Marsh. During the speech, Marsh was emotional and made others in the hall like Pat Cummins and his wife emotional as well.

In the women’s category, Ashleigh Gardner won the award for the Player of the Year. She had a better share of votes (147) as compared to the likes of Ellyse Perry (134) and Annabel Sutherland (106). Despite missing three Test matches due to a calf injury, Nathan Lyon won the Shane Warne men’s Test player of the year award.
