The cricket universe was rocked recently as Meg Lanning, the captain of Australia’s women’s cricket team, announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket at the age of 31. Lanning, one of the most prolific batters of the game, made the surprising decision, leaving fans and fellow players stunned. 

With a remarkable career that included numerous records and achievements, Lanning’s departure marks the end of an era in Australian women’s cricket. She led her team to victory in multiple World Cups and was widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest talents. Her presence will be sorely missed on the international stage.

While announcing her retirement, the cricket star got emotional and couldn’t hold up her tears. She said that this was the right to call it up and move on to something new. Fans around the world are sending their best wishes to the legend for her future endeavours.

“The decision to step away from international cricket was a difficult one to make, but I feel now is the right time for me. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to enjoy a 13-year international career, but I know now is the right time for me to move on to something new,”

I’d like to thank my family, my teammates, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association for their support in allowing me to play the game I love at the highest level. I also want to say a huge thank you to all the fans who have supported me throughout my international career,” she said.

Lanning, who made her debut in 2010, leaves an indelible mark with 4,602 runs in 103 Women’s ODIs, the third-most for an Aussie. Her average of 53.51 is unmatched, with the highest among batters exceeding 1,500 runs. Lanning holds the record for the most tons (15) and 21 half-centuries.

In Women’s T20Is, she ranks second with 3,405 runs and an average of 36.61, featuring 15 half-centuries and two centuries. Her unbeaten 133* against England in 2019 is the second-highest score by a full-member team batter in WT20Is. She’s also the joint-most capped WT20I captain with 100 matches. Lanning’s leadership secured five major titles for Australia
