On this day in 2009, Virat Kohli announced himself in the international arena. Chasing a target of 316 runs, Virat scored a fantastic hundred against Sri Lanka. It was the start of an era in cricket that marked the spark of a chase master in ODIs. Since then, Virat has won many matches for India as a run-chaser. The star batter has arguably been the greatest run-chaser in limited-overs cricket.

India was reduced to 40/2 when Virat entered the middle. At Eden Gardens in Kolkata, chasing targets was never easy. Against a good attack from Sri Lanka, it was only more difficult than usual. With two opening batters back in the hut, the onus was on Gautam Gambhir to lead India in the run chase. Virat batted naturally without any pressure. It helped him exhibit his class.

The star batter hit some lovely drives and flick shots. His play against pace was highly impressive even from the start. But at the international level, Kohli displayed a brilliant play against spin, albeit against the likes of Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya. The trademark shots like flick shots, backfoot punches, and straight drives were all on display, which impressed the fans.

The beginning of the chase master

With Gambhir going well at the other end, Virat took his time. Once set, both Gambir and Virat went after the batters. The platform was set for a big chase and Virat played brilliantly. The middle-order batter was brilliant in the covers region. The cut shot of Kohli was the highlight in his innings against Sri Lanka. The knock of Virat included many boundaries behind the square.

Virat got to his hundred in just 110 balls. A huge roar came out as Virat punched the air in delight. The crowd acknowledged the performance of the youngster which was to become common in the days to come. Virat was dismissed against the run of play after being involved in a 200+ run stand with Gambhir. The latter took India home with a marathon knock while chasing.
