Pakistan skipper Babar Azam uploaded a picture of himself on his Instagram. While there were many comments, one caught the eye of the fans. Apparently, IShowSpeed, a famous YouTuber and a fanboy of former India skipper Virat Kohli wrote ‘Virat obolo tos the GOAT’.

Babar Azam may get dethroned by Shubman Gill as the Number One ODI batter

Meanwhile, the Pakistan skipper remained the number-one batter for more than two years. In August 2021, Azam dethroned Kohli after the latter remained at this spot for 1258 days. Since then, the 2017 Champions Trophy winner remained in this position before September 24, 2023. Apparently, ahead of the ongoing ODI series between India and Australia, Shubman Gill needed 200 runs to dethrone Azam.

On the other hand, the right-hander, Azam didn’t have the best of Asia Cup 2023 after scoring 151 not out against Nepal. In the rest of the tournament, he failed to score a fifty against other teams such as India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Now, Gill has reached 178 runs and needs only 22 more runs in the last ODI on September 27.

A day after this, India’s final squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 will be announced. Notably, the squad might remain pretty much the same for the tournament, compared to the preliminary squad. On the other hand, Babar Azam will lead the team for the first time in an ODI WC. His stint in the T20 World Cups (2021 and 2022) has been fine as the team reached a semi and a final.

India Squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav.
