‘Tribute de raha hai kya’ – Fans react to viral image of Suryakumar Yadav wearing Sanju Samson’s jersey during 1st ODI vs WI
On 27 July 2023, Team India locked horns with West Indies in the first of the three-match ODI series in Bridgetown. Fans were eagerly waiting to see which players get the chance to play as this series is the first stepping stone for them to get prepared for the upcoming ODI World Cup. Sanju Samson was one of the names that fans were expecting to see in the final playing XI.
But, at the toss, Team India skipper, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl. But, when he shared the playing XI, fans were left surprised as Samson did not get a chance. Ishan Kishan got selected as the wicketkeeper. However, while fielding, fans became surprised to see a player with Samson’s ‘9’ numbered jersey. Later, it was found that Suryakumar Yadav was wearing that. Images went viral and seeing that, fans shared their views.

Sanju Samson last played for Team India in January 2023
At the toss, Rohit said: “We are gonna field first, no particular reason. We are gonna try a few different things. We want to head into the World Cup with a clear mindset. For us, the results are also important. At times, we are going to try out different players but we don’t want to compromise on our results. All cricketers around the world who are playing all formats need to adapt well. Hopefully, we can get what we want here. We have got four seamers and two spinners.”
Speaking of Sanju Samson, he last played for Team India in January 2023. After that, due to a knee injury, he failed to make a comeback until the IPL 2023. For Rajasthan Royals (RR), he scored just 362 runs in 14 games, at an average of 30.17 while he also failed to take RR to the qualifiers as they finished in the fifth spot with 14 points in 14 games. So, fans were not happy as Team India opted for Ishan Kishan instead of Samson for this series opener.
