ODI World Cup 2023
Shubman Gill talks about India’s journey so far in ODI World Cup 2023
India chased the target of 257 runs against Bangladesh with relative ease to clinch the fourth consecutive win of the tournament. Along with New Zealand, India remains the only other team to be unbeaten in the ODI World Cup 2023 till now. It is interesting to note that India has successfully chased the targets in all the four matches in the tournament.
Shubman Gill, who missed out of the team in the first two matches of the tournament against Australia and Afghanistan respectively due to dengue fever, made a good comeback by scoring fifty against Bangladesh. Against Pakistan, Gill could not score big, but had given a quick start to the team. After the win against Bangladesh, Gill spoke in the post-match conference.
Speaking about the chasing abilities of the batters in the team, Gill said that India talked about chasing big totals in the ODI World Cup. “You can see how confident they are while scoring runs. Definitely, I think this is one of the things which was talked about, especially leading up to the World Cup, that we were not chasing that well, those big totals,” said Gill.
Shubman Gill praises Indian spinners in ODI World Cup 2023
Gill also praised the Indian spinners for their campaign till now in the tournament. “I think leading up to the World Cup, especially when we were playing in Sri Lanka, the wickets were assisting spin. But here, I do not think (that) after the first match, there was much assistance for the spinners,” claimed the youngster.
The Indian opener said that the way spinners have bowled in the middle overs has been crucial for the team. “But the way they have bowled in the middle overs (they) have been exceptional. And that has been actually game-changing for us,” added Gill.
“At one point, we were looking at maybe 300-320 (given) the way their openers were batting, but the way, especially in the middle overs, our bowlers are coming in especially spinners and getting us those crucial breakthroughs and keeping the pressure on the batsmen — that is a big difference for us,” added Gill.
