Shubman Gill reveals he is not 100 percent fit after surviving Dengue
India’s opening batter Shubman Gill suffered cramps during the first semifinal of the ODI WC 2023 against New Zealand under Mumbai’s humidity. After winning the toss, the home team had a great start and the team was at 157/1 in 22 overs. In the 23rd over, Gill, who was batting at 79 sustained cramps and was taken for treatment as the team didn’t want to take undue risks.
The right-hander came back to bat in the last over of the first innings, adding one more run to his tally. In the end, the team managed to get 397/4. For the Kiwis, despite the likes of Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson fighting back, they were bowled out for 327 runs. With the 70-run win, the Men In Blue have entered the final for the first time after 2011.
My reserves before catching Dengue have diminished: Shubman Gill
After the game, the 2018 U19 World Cup winner said that the body cramps were due to the aftereffect of Dengue. He added that he has lost a bit of muscle mass due to the disease.
“It started with cramps and I pulled my hamstring. It was humid out there and also after effects of dengue. I will be okay for finals,” Gill said.
“I have not really adjusted anything in terms of my batting. Because I’ve lost a bit of muscle mass, the reserve that I had before dengue, it has decreased. You do get cramps while playing for long in such humid conditions, but generally, that happens after a long period of time, not so soon. I’ve lost muscle mass due to which that reserve has gone down,” he further stated.
Ahead of India’s opening game against Australia, Gill missed the first two games against Australia and Afghanistan due to Dengue. He had to stay back in Chennai before recovering and joining the team in Ahmedabad for the match against Pakistan. Since then, he has scored a few fifties but not a hundred.
