The famous Hindi newspaper, Dainik Jagran, found itself at the centre of a controversy, as it allegedly published an article criticising modern-day great cricketer Virat Kohli. The publication’s critical take on Kohli’s performance in the ongoing 2023 World Cup triggered a wave of backlash from his devoted fan base.

The controversy began when Dainik Jagran questioned Kohli’s selflessness on the field during the World Cup. The article specifically highlighted instances where Kohli was criticised for taking longer to reach his century in two different matches. Despite these criticisms, it’s essential to note that India emerged victorious in both of these games and is on the verge of reaching the World Cup semi-finals.

However, this critique did not sit well with many fans, and some took to social media to express their discontent. The hashtag #boycottdainikjagran trended on various platforms, notably X (formerly Twitter), and some fans were even seen burning copies of the newspaper as a form of protest.

Virat Kohli is India’s 2nd leading run-scorer in ODI World Cup 2023

Despite the ongoing controversy, the Indian cricket team continues to dominate in the World Cup. They achieved a resounding 100-run victory against England, with bowlers like Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah shining as they took crucial wickets. However, Kohli faced a disappointing match as he was dismissed for a duck, further fueling the ongoing debate about his performance while batting first.

As the World Cup progresses, the focus remains on Kohli and his performance, with his critics and fans eagerly awaiting his next innings. Dainik Jagran’s article and the subsequent fan backlash serve as proof of the passion that cricket evokes in India, where the sport is not just a game but a way of life.

India will play their 7th match of the World Cup against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on November 2. However, the fans are waiting for the big clash between the Men in Blue and South Africa which will take place on Kohli’s birthday, November 5 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
