In the 14th game of the ongoing CPL 2023, Barbados Royals locked horns with Jamaica Tallawahs. Ahead of the game, the two-time winners, Royals were coming off a 133-run defeat against four-time winners, Trinbago Knight Riders. On the other hand, the defending champs, Tallawahs were coming off a 34-run loss against five-time finalists, Guyana Amazon Warriors. Meanwhile, in the game, the home side, Royals won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Their bowlers responded well with three wickets inside the powerplay including recently retired England cricketer, Alex Hales. At 23/3, the likes of Shamarh Brooks and Raymon Reifer put together 54 runs with the former doing the heavy lifting. He scored 78 off 41 balls including seven fours and four sixes. Pakistan international Imad Wasim played a cameo of 33 runs in 24 balls and helped the team reach 160/7 at the end of the innings.

Former West Indies skipper Jason Holder and Afghanistan international Qais Ahmad took two wickets each. On the other hand, Netherlands’ Roelof van der Merve and Kyle Mayers took one each.

Barbados Royals chased down the target easily

Given that the former winners batted poorly against TKR, they needed a much better performance. They had a poor start though as Mayers, who struggled his way to four runs (in 14 balls) was trapped lbw by Chris Green. His team might have felt relieved with his dismissal in this game particularly. Rahkeem Cornwall, who is short on runs this season, was cleaned up by Imad Wasim for 17.

At 25/4, Laurie Evans and Alick Athanaze put together 89 runs. While the former played almost a run-a-ball 30 (taking 26 balls to be precise), Alick attacked the opposition bowlers. He ended up getting 76 off 48 balls including seven fours and three sixes. In the end, the likes of skipper Rovman Powell and former skipper Jason Holder took the team over the line with one over to go. This win might boost up the Pink Brigade although they are struggling with the Net Run Rate.
