Former India skipper Virat Kohli had a rare failure against Pakistan in the Group A game of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. In the game, the Men In Blue won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a bold decision as the weather was overcast and the pitch had something for the new ball bowlers. Before the first rain break, Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill tackled the new ball well.

However, after the first rain break, Shaheen Afridi removed skipper Sharma and Kohli in no time. The latter had a rare failure against Pakistan with the bat. The last time Kohli failed was in the Champions Trophy 2017 final. In the last six years, the right-hander never failed against the Green Brigade irrespective of formats. Meanwhile, a video of a fan expressing disappointment over the Delhi player’s failure is going viral.

India did well with the bat despite top-order failure

The seven-time winners had a horror start as they lost four wickets for 66 runs. Former and current skippers, Sharma and Kohli were removed by Afridi. On the other hand, Haris Rauf removed Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill in no time. However, the former champions found unlikely heroes in the form of Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya.

Both put together 138 runs for the fifth wicket. Not to forget, despite losing four wickets early, these players managed to maintain the run rate between 4.5 to 5 per over. Kishan amassed 82 with nine fours and two sixes. On the other hand, Pandya got 87 with seven fours and a six. At one stage, they looked like taking the team to 300 plus runs.

However, in the last few overs, they lost wickets and were restricted to 266 all-out. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah (16) showed some spine with the bat as well. Pakistan couldn’t even have a chance of chasing down the target as the game was abandoned by rain.
