‘Pakistan ka rona phir shuru ho jaayega’ – Fans react as upcoming edition of Asia Cup set to be in T20 format

The upcoming edition of the Asia Cup is set to be played in the T20 format. Asia Cup is a tournament where the top teams from the Asian continent take on each other. In the initial years, there used to be not many competitors who could challenge the top teams in the tournament. In current times, there are at least five teams that can go head-on and toe-to-toe against each other.

In the past, Asia Cup did not have anything to do with the World Cup. However, in the last 10 years or so, Asia Cup has acted more as a preparatory assignment for the Asian teams ahead of some of the big World Cups like the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup. Before the T20 World Cup 2016, the Asia Cup took place in the T20 format as a preparatory assignment for the teams.

Since then, the tournament has been organized such a way that the format of the Asia Cup depends on the World Cup being played in the year. For instance, the Asia Cup 2018 happened in ODIs, as the World Cup in 2019 was to be played in the ODI format. There was not a single Asia Cup being played from 2018 to 2022 due to the pandemic.

T20s the future of Asia Cup?

In 2022, the Asia Cup was being played in the T20 format as the year saw T20 World Cup in Australia. Last year in September, the Asia Cup took place in the ODI format, as the ODI World Cup took place in India.

It makes one wonder if Asia Cup is just a preparatory assignment for the teams or a lot more than it. The fans expect the tournament to be completely in T20I format in the upcoming days.

It might well make a case for itself given the fact that ODIs are not being preferred by the boards due to the lack of viewership. However, T20Is are being viewed by a lot of fans in different parts of the world, making it the most happening format currently.
