Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers has opined that Virat Kohli must bat at number four. India has been searching for a number four in the last few years. At one time, Shreyas Iyer became an option but he has recently returned from a back injury. Also, the right-hander has a weakness against short-pitched bowling from pacers.

Meanwhile, De Villiers feels that Kohli can bat at number four in ODI cricket. India’s next two biggest assignments are Asia and the ODI World Cup this year. The former South Africa skipper added that he doesn’t if Virat wants to bat in the middle order but has every skills to do so.

“We’re still talking about who will be the No. 4 batter for India. I’ve heard some rumours about Virat possibly taking up that position. I would be a big supporter of that,” de Villiers said on his Youtube channel ‘AB de Villiers 360. “I think Virat is perfect for No. 4. He can put the innings together, play any kind of role in that middle order. I don’t know if he would like to do that. We know he loves his No. 3 position; he’s scored all his runs there, but at the end of the day, if the team needs you to do something, play a certain role, you have got to put your hand up and got for it.”

Virat Kohli has a great record at number four

The former India skipper has a great record batting at number four. In his early career, he batted at this position as the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Gautam Gambhir. In 42 games, the 2008 U19 World Cup-winning skipper has amassed 1731 runs averaging 55.21 including seven tons and eight fifties.
