November 11, 2023, marked the end of Pakistan’s journey in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 as the fans witnessed a thrilling encounter at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where England faced Pakistan in the 44th match of the tournament. The Men in Green suffered an embarrassing 93-run loss to the English side.

The contest was a one-sided affair, culminating in England’s commanding victory, effectively eliminating Pakistan from the tournament. England’s formidable total of 337/9, led by standout performances from Ben Stokes (84) and Joe Root (60), proved insurmountable for the Pakistani side.

However, the contest, unfortunately for Pakistan, not only unfolded on the field but also became a stage for off-field banter, with former England captain Michael Vaughan taking a dig at Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Hafeez. Vaughan seized the moment to tease Hafeez, who had previously criticized Virat Kohli for being ‘selfish’ after the Indian captain’s century against South Africa in Kolkata.

He took to his social media handle and tweeted, “Maybe Pakistan’s batters need to be a bit more selfish like Virat.” Pakistan’s batting performance was very poor in the match as only Agha Salman looked good on the surface as he smashed a brilliant half-century.

Very disappointed with the performance: Babar Azam

This defeat marked Pakistan’s fifth failure to reach the semi-finals in the last six editions of the 50-over tournament. However, now it’d be interesting to see Hafeez’s response to Vaughan’s remarks. As Pakistan are eliminated, there are many eyes will be on Hafeez’s response. However, take a look at what Babar said after losing the match,.

“Yes, very disappointed with the performance. If we had won SA match, could’ve been a different story. But yes, have made mistakes in bowling, batting and fielding. We gave 20-30 runs extra. Bowled few loose deliveries. Our spinners haven’t taken wickets. That’s had a big effect. If spinners don’t take wickets in middle over, you struggle. We have to sit together. Let’s see. Will take positives and discuss our mistakes also. I will do the best to pitch in my experience (keen to lead?).” Babar said in the post-match presentation.
