Former India skipper MS Dhoni filed a contempt of court case against an IPS officer Sampath Kumar. The latter has been continuously challenging the embargo on the spot-fixing scam put on him over the years. For the unversed, Kumar has been challenging the Supreme Court of India’s order of not revealing the names during the 2013 IPL spot-fixing case.

The controversy led to the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings getting suspended for two seasons in late 2015. Apart from this, three players from the Royals were banned for life. Also, the Super Kings’ team principal and son-in-law of N. Srinivasan, the owner of the franchise, was banned for life too. In December 2021, in reply to Dhoni filing a defamation suit, Kumar filed an additional statement about the 2013 case.

Kumar stated that SC deviated its focus: MS Dhoni

Meanwhile, a contempt case filed by the wicketkeeper batter stated that Kumar is alleging the SC of deviating the focus.

“He (Sampath Kumar) has stated that the Supreme Court deviated its focus on the rule of law and shelved the deposition of the Justice Mudgal Committee (constituted to probe 2013 match-fixing allegations) and kept it in a sealed cover for reasons he failed to comprehend,” Dhoni said.

This apart, the officer had also maligned, disrespected, and scandalized the Madras High Court and made false allegations against designated senior counsels of the court including the office of the advocate general of Tamil Nadu, Dhoni said.

Allowing the plea, the bench found Sampath Kumar guilty of the offense of contempt of court.
