Amid Pakistan’s poor performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, star batter Shoaib Malik wants to play for the team in next year’s T20 World Cup. The 42-year-old all-rounder is looking to break Universe Boss Chris Gayle’s record of most runs in T20 cricket. This comes after Babar Azam led Pakistan’s shocking exit from the marquee event.

“My goal is to score around 2000 runs to go past Chris Gayle and become the best player in T20 cricket. I am open to playing, but clarity is needed. I am not playing cricket to represent Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup. I play the game because I enjoy it. There is no problem with fitness,” Malik said while speaking with A Sports.

It’s worth noting that Gayle has scored 14562 runs in 463 matches at an average of 36.22 and a strike rate of 144.75. He has scored 22 centuries and 88 fifties in the shortest format of the game. On the other hand, Malik has played 515 T20 games and scored 12688 runs. He has scored at an average of 36.25 and a strike rate of 127.68. Malik has scored 79 half-centuries in his T20 career.

“Travelling is just an excuse”, says Shoaib Malik

Earlier, the former Pakistan skipper slammed team management for making excuses after a poor show in the ODI World Cup. While speaking at A Sports, Malik said that travelling is an excuse. The whole world is travelling. Look at India’s calendar. Their pacers didn’t lose pace or swing. It is professionalism that is missing in our team.”

“You ask half of them, and they would not know how to recover. In the recent past, we didn’t have any ingredients that could help you get rid of cramps. We saw that in the case of Maxwell, they gave him some gels, and he played with severe cramps. It is all an excuse. Travelin doesn’t matter,” he further added.
