India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, shared insights into the team’s preparation and selection process for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. He emphasised the challenges of keeping everyone happy while aiming for victory. The statement came after India secured a thrilling 3-0 series win against Afghanistan with a nail-biting second Super Over at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Rohit Sharma emerged as the hero of the evening, delivering a record-breaking fifth T20I hundred and playing a crucial role in both Super Overs that sealed the series for India. In an interview with Jio Cinema post-match, Rohit shed light on the team selection and preparations for the T20 World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to be held in the West Indies and USA, starting June 5, where India will face Ireland in their opening match.

The skipper disclosed that the squad of 15 players had not been finalised yet, but around 8–10 players were being considered. He emphasised the need to adapt the team according to the conditions in the West Indies, which typically favour slow pitches.

“We will try again to win the World Cup. We have not finalised the 15-member squad, but there are 8–10 players in our minds. So, we will make our combinations according to the conditions. In the West Indies, the conditions are slow, so we’ll have to pick our team accordingly. As far as Rahul Dravid and I are concerned, we’ve tried to maintain clarity. We try to tell them why they’ve been selected or not been selected even after putting in performances,” said Rohit.

“You can’t keep everyone happy,” says Rohit Sharma.

Reflecting on his captaincy, Rohit Sharma acknowledged the impossibility of keeping everyone content with playing time, stating, “You can’t keep everyone happy; that is what I’ve learned in my time as captain. You can keep 15 players happy. Then also, only 11 are happy.”

“The four players sitting on the bench also ask why they’re not playing. I’ve learned that you can’t keep everyone happy, and the focus should be on the team’s goal,” Rohit added. It’s worth noting that India has been placed in Group A of the 2024 T20 World Cup alongside Ireland, Pakistan, the USA, and Canada. The team’s strategy will involve careful consideration of the conditions and opposition as they strive for success in the tournament.

Meanwhile, India’s unbeaten streak against Afghanistan in T20Is extended to 6-0, highlighting the team’s dominance in the format. With the T20I series concluded, Rohit Sharma and his team will now shift their attention to the upcoming five-match Test series against England, set to commence on January 25.
