The Pakistan men’s cricket team played again for the first time since May of this year as they ended two-match Test series against Sri Lanka with a 2-0 victory. The series was also the start of Pakistan’s World Test Championship cycle after the team had a disastrous 2021–23 cycle in the competition, failing to record a single home victory. Pakistan actually lost the home series to Australia and England last year while only winning one Test in nine which was also against Sri Lanka.

After a poor home season, Babar Azam’s captaincy in the longest format of the game came under scrutiny, and the issue has come up again as the team starts its campaign in the current cycle. Babar participated in a news conference when he was questioned about his potential Test captaincy before the team left for Sri Lanka. The star Pakistan batter assured about his captaincy and the mindset of the team ahead of the start of the new WTC cycle.

The true test of Babar Azam’s captaincy lies ahead in SENA countries

A recent stat which is floating on the internet shows the Ratio of away Test matches won by Asian captains. As per records, Babar Azam is leading the chart with a maximum win percentage of 80 % followed by Virat Kohli who has 44.44 %, Misbah Ul Haq who has 40/60 %, and Sourav Ganguly at 39.28 %. However, this record seems to be forged as the Pakistan side have not played the likes of Australia, England, South Africa, and New Zealand on their home soil.

It is considered that the real test of Babar’s captaincy is when the team would be travelling in the SENA countries and then winning the matches in those tough conditions. The likes of Virat Kohli who was the captain of the team India at the time when the Indian team won the Test series in Australia as well as were arguably the best touring team with a great win-loss percentage.
