India and Afghanistan clashed against each other in the 9th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday, October 11. The Men in Blue displayed a brilliant all-round performance and defeated the Afghans by 8 wickets.

Talking about the match, Afghanistan elected to bat first after winning the toss. However, despite getting a decent start from the openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan started getting into trouble after India’s premium pacer Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Zadran in the 7th over.

Afghanistan were badly affected by that wicket as they then lost another 2 wickets and the score was 63/3 at one stage. However, the Afghans recovered nicely with a century stand between captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai. Both completed their half-century but departed in a crucial stage due to which they couldn’t get past the 300-mark which was looking easily achievable at one stage. Bumrah’s brilliant bowling performance helped India to restrict them to the score of 272 runs.

Brilliant batting performance by Rohit Sharma

Chasing the target, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma provided a breathtaking start to the team and smashed a cracking 63-ball century. He didn’t spare any bowler whether it’s spinner or pacer. He played a magnificent knock of 131 runs off just 84 balls which included 16 fours and 5 sixes.

He also stitched a 156-run stand with Ishan Kishan for the 1st wicket and set the foundation for a successful chase. Kishann departed in the 19th over after scoring 47 runs. Rohit also went back to the pavilion in the 26th over, however, Virat Kohli and Shreyas ensured a secure win as the Men in Blue chased the target with 8 wickets in hand. Rohit talked about his knock and the team’s performance.

It was a good pitch to bat on, just backed myself to play my natural game. I knew once I got my eye in, the wicket was going to get easier for me. Something that I have been working on for a long time. It’s a special feeling to get a World Cup hundred. Really happy with that. Don’t want to think too much (scoring 7 hundreds in just three World Cups), I don’t want to lose my focus. You need to make such things count. You gotta make it big. Some of it (the shots he plays) is premeditated.” Rohit was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times
