‘Hyderabad ka ghamand tut gya’ – Fans react as India lose to England by 28 runs in first Test of five-match series

India and England locked horns in the first Test of the five-match series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. The visitors held their nerves and emerged victorious by 28 runs on the fourth day of the game to gain a lead of 1-0 in the five-match series.

England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first; however, the visitors got bundled out at 246 runs in the first innings courtesy of skipper Ben Stokes’ 70-run knock to help his side.

In response to the 246-run total of England, India managed to post a total of 436 runs in the first innings to gain a lead of 190 runs at the end of the first innings. India got the support of three 80+ knocks from Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Former England skipper Joe Root scalped 4 wickets in the first innings, alongside two wickets each picked by Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed. Besides these three, Jack Leach also picked one wicket.

Tom Hartley shone for England in the fourth innings

England came quite strong in the second innings with a score of 420 runs to register a 230-run lead and post a target of 231 runs for India to chase down in the match’s fourth innings. Star number three batter Ollie Pope played an outstanding knock of 196 runs, with 21 fours to put England in a commanding position against the hosts.

Star pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah claimed four wickets in the second innings, including 2 and 3 wickets bagged by Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. Axar Patel also picked up one wicket for India in the second innings.

While chasing the target, India couldn’t cross the line and got bundled out at the score of 202 runs in their run-chase of the 231-run target. England debutant Tom Hartley bagged an amazing 7-wicket haul to help his side win by 28 runs.

Eventually, the visitors clinched a thrilling win at the end of the fourth day of the match to gain a lead of 1-0 in the series.
