Assam Reports First Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Case of the Season
Assam’s First HMPV Case This Season
Assam has reported its first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) this season, with a 10-month-old child testing positive for the virus. The infant is receiving treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh and is said to be in a stable condition.
Details of the Case
The child was admitted to AMCH with cold-like symptoms four days ago. Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, the hospital superintendent, confirmed that the HMPV infection was detected following routine testing. The test results were obtained from the ICMR-RMRC in Lahowal.
Routine Testing and Commonality of HMPV
According to Dr. Bhuyan, the virus was identified during routine tests for influenza and flu-related illnesses. He reassured that HMPV is a common virus, and there is no immediate cause for concern. The child’s condition is stable.
Previous HMPV Cases in Dibrugarh
Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty, senior scientist at the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre in Lahowal, highlighted that HMPV has been detected regularly in Dibrugarh since 2014. This year’s case is the first confirmed instance of HMPV for the season.
About HMPV
HMPV is a respiratory virus that generally causes mild cold-like symptoms. Although it has circulated since the 1970s, it was first identified in 2001. The virus is responsible for 4-16% of acute respiratory infections globally. While adults typically have immunity, infants and individuals with weakened immune systems may experience more severe symptoms upon first exposure.
Recent HMPV Cases in Other States
Other states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, have also reported HMPV cases. Gujarat has confirmed three cases, while Maharashtra has seen two suspected cases. Authorities are monitoring the situation across India.
