India defeated Ireland in the first match of the ongoing 3-match T20I series at The Village in Dublin on Friday, August 18. The Men in Blue achieved the victory by 2 runs as per the DLS method. Indian bowlers were brilliant with the ball while the batters didn’t get much to play.

But the opener Ruturaj Gaikwad looked in great touch as he was unbeaten on 19 runs. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Kiran More heaped praise on Gaikwad and said that he can play any format of the game. He even believes that the right-hander can be India’s captain in future. Interestingly, Gaiwad will be seen leading India’s squad in the upcoming Asian Games 2023, it’d be interesting to see how well he leads his side.

“I’m waiting for his (Gaikwad) Test debut. Both (Gaikwad and Jaiswal) are outstanding players. Ruturaj can play all formats, his basics are so correct. He can be the future captain of India as well, he has got a great temperament. He’s playing under MS Dhoni, so he must have learnt things about handling the team and handling the situations. He’s a quality player, and I’m waiting for him to make his Test debut,” More was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.

Things are not easy for Gaikwad: Saba Karim

Another former Indian cricketer Saba Karim sheds light on Gaikwad’s upcoming opportunity and said that it won’t be easy for him to cement his place in the team in future as players like Yashasvi Jaiswal are performing very well for the national side. On the other hand, Gaiwad has played 10 T20Is and 2 ODI matches in which he has only 1 half-century.

“Yashasvi scored a hundred on Test debut, then smashed a half-century during the T20I series against West Indies as well. Things are not easy for him, because there are several cricketers waiting for Ruturaj Gaikwad to fail so they can get a look-in. This is when your character has to come out, can you take that pressure? That is why this is a phase where he has to rely on his ability and try to put a big score,” he said.
