Ghoomer Movie review – A firm effort with emotional over-spin

Ghoomer Movie review- In a supercharged sports comeback drama that leaves little space for grey zones, director R. Balki goes all out to extract every last drop of mush from the material. The no-holds-barred Ghoomer, which is constantly in power-hitting mode, occasionally gets lost in its own emotional over-spin, especially during the conclusion.

The film’s screenplay, which the filmmaker co-wrote with Rishi Virmani and Rahul Sengupta, is a dramatic and inspirational example of the human spirit beating all circumstances. There are no complaints. Ghoomer might have been more realistic and left more to the imagination if it did not provide everything in the kind of dollop that it does.

Ghoomer Honest review

After being selected to play for India against England, teenage batting star Anina Dixit (Saiyami Kher) suffers the loss of her right hand in an accident. Abhishek Bachchan’s character, Padam “Paddy” Singh Sodhi, a drunken former cricketer, approaches the girl at her home and assures her that her journey isn’t over.

And thus the arduous process of practising on a 22-yard pitch constructed in the coach’s backyard gets started. Anina is forced to overcome her disability and master the skills necessary to become a left-arm spinner because Paddy refuses to give her any quarters. This tale of human resilience does have its moments because of the engaging lead performances and a few situations that touch the viewer’s emotions.

Screenplay

The turnaround story is made all the more emotional and mind-blowing by the sporadic unequal conflicts between the divergent personalities—one has lost everything, the other has nothing to lose, and the line dividing the two is frequently blurred.

Drama abounds here, and Paddy’s relentlessly aggressive coaching style—best shown by the fact that he forces Anina to bowl on a surface covered in buffalo dung in order to reduce his ward’s margin for error—accentuates the size of the challenges standing in Anina’s path. It helps the girl’s accuracy right away.

Cast: Saiyami Kher, Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Angad Bedi, Amitabh Bachchan

Director: R Balki

The Ghoomer movie gets 3 stars from 5. It is a one-time watch for all sports lovers.
