Former Pakistani players blasts Babar Azam while giving Virat Kohli’s example
Babar Azam has been in the eye of the storm in recent weeks owing to his failure to help Pakistan do well in the ODI World Cup 2023. The men in green did not manage to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament and finished 5th in the table.
Former cricketers have now come out and started to question the captaincy of Babar Azam. One former player in particular has made some hard-hitting comments on the 29-year-old and his leadership skills.
The former player in question is none other than Aaqib Javed who was a well-known fast bowler in the 1990’s. The 51-year-old gave the example of Virat Kohli when speaking about Babar Azam’s captaincy and how the PCB needs to take a hard stand.
Aaqib Javed slams Babar Azam’s captaincy –
Showing his anger for Pakistan’s bad performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, Aaqib Javed slammed Babar Azam and his leadership skills. The 51-year-old implied that the PCB had given the current skipper lots of chances to prove his credentials.
Speaking to Suno News, Aaqib Javed Said “Captains can’t be made. Either you are a captain or you are not. Virat Kohli became the captain. He was given the opportunity. After the 2019 Word Cup he was told ‘Thank you very much. You might be a superstar, but ghar jao‘. They changed the captain and brought in Rohit Sharma”
The former Pakistan pacer heaped praise on Rohit Sharma when he said “Why is Rohit Sharma such a good captain? In IPL, he led the team to five titles. But Virat Kohli did not do anything in the IPL or the World Cup. Now, compare it with Babar Azam. He did not win anything as captain in the Pakistan Super League. People say he is a good captain, but where did he show his good captaincy?
The 51-year-old also cited the example of Sachin Tendulkar who did not have the greatest captaincy record for the Indian side. “Sachin Tendulkar was a superstar batter but he was not a good captain. Babar is a good batter, but he is not a good captain”
Aaqib Javed also happened to speak about former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed to round off his comments. “Sarfaraz Ahmed won you the Champions Trophy because he was a good captain. He won you the U-19 World Cup. Your captain tells you at every stage that he is a captain. At what stage did Babar Azam show he is a good captain?”
