Sunil Gavaskar gave a piece of advice to Shubman Gill in order to succeed in Test cricket. The former Indian cricketer felt that Gill is currently playing a bit too aggressively and felt that the youngster needs to take some time to get set in the middle. The statement from Gavaskar comes following the failure of Gill in the longest format of the game in recent times.

Gavaskar felt that there is a difference in tempo while batting in Tests as compared to that in limited overs cricket. The former Indian opener added that Test cricket is played in red ball, compared to the limited overs cricket which is being played in white ball. The former Indian cricketer felt that the red ball moves a bit more than white ball off the pitch and through the air.

Speaking to the broadcasters after the completion of the Centurion Test, Gavaskar said that Gill must keep his advice in mind. Ever since his performance in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023, Gill has not had a good performance in Tests. The star batter has been inconsistent and needs a lot of improvement in his performance. In the last few games, Gill has not even scored over 30 runs in an innings.

‘Hope he trains harder and does well in the future’ – Sunil Gavaskar

In the last 9 Test innings, the scores of Gill read 21, 5, 13, 18, 6, 10, 29*, 2, and 26. For a batter of Gill’s class these are not impressive numbers at all. The former opener said that Gill started his career with good looking shots which was praised by everyone. Gavaskar hence felt that Shubman Gill needs to train a bit harder in order to perform well in the upcoming days.

“Shubman Gill started off his career so well and we praised his shots. We can only hope that he gets back into his form. Hope he trains harder and does well in the future,” added Gavaskar. India will be playing its next Test at Cape Town against South Africa and would be hoping to back to form. New year might hopefully bring new luck to the star batter.
