The format for the T20 World Cup 2024 is out. For the first time in the history of the tournament, 20 teams would be taking part in the main round of the T20 World Cup. It is the most in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. The format for the tournament has four different levels. Even before it could happen, there was a different way of qualification for the tournament.

The USA and the West Indies qualified for the tournament, as they were named the hosts. 10 teams that took part in the T20 World Cup 2022, qualified for the 2024 edition of the tournament. The group stage of the 2022 tournament had 6 teams each in the two groups. The teams that finished in the first five positions of each group qualified for the 2024 T20 WC directly.

From Group 1, the likes of India, Bangladesh, South Africa, Pakistan, and the Netherlands qualified. Zimbabwe could not qualify for the tournament directly and ended up not qualifying even in the qualification round. From Group 2, the likes of Australia, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka qualified directly. Ireland could not qualify directly. They did take part in the qualifiers and ended up qualifying for the tournament.

Format of the T20 World Cup 2024

In the qualification round, 8 teams from various continents and regions qualified. They include the likes of Papua New Guinea, Canada, Nepal, Oman, Uganda, Namibia, Ireland, and Scotland. These 20 teams will be divided into 4 groups and each of them will have 5 teams each. The top 2 teams from each group would proceed further to the Super 8 stage of the tournament. The team would further be divided into two groups.

In the Super 8 stage, two groups will feature 4 teams each. The teams will take on each other in their respective groups in the round-robin format. The team ending the group in the top 2 spots will qualify for the semifinal of the tournament. The teams topping the group will take on the teams finishing the second of the opposite groups in the semifinal of the tournament, respectively.
