According to the Producers Guild of India and the Multiplex Association of India, the weekend of August 11–13 marked the busiest weekend since the theatres’ reopening. All four of the star-driven films—Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2, Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2, Rajinikanth’s Jailer in Tamil, and Chiranjeevi’s Bholaa Shankar—released around the same period at the box office and have been doing admirably.

In the more than 100-year history of the movie business, the weekend set a new all-time record for theatrical gross box office revenue of more than 390 crore. More than 2.10 crore moviegoers visited theatres during the course of the last weekend, setting a record for most total admissions in the previous ten years.

OMG 2 grossed 43.06 crore in its first weekend of release compared to Gadar 2’s 135 crore. Since its release on August 10, Jailer has made 150 crore in four days thanks to a head start. Bholaa Shankar has so far brought in 25 crores at the box office.

‘Even the early-morning performances [shows] are selling out’ – Shibasish Sarkar

Shibasish Sarkar, president of the Producers Guild of India stated, “The correct execution of mainstream storytelling has caused box office records to be broken. A fantastic filmmaking team, including cast and crew working together to produce a truly unique movie-going experience, is the source of a monumental accomplishment like this. The attendance at theatres has given our sector a new vigour; audiences are responding in numbers we haven’t seen in a long time; even the early-morning performances are selling out. This past weekend has been excellent for fans of mainstream Indian cinema.”

“It was a historic weekend, demonstrating once more how much India enjoys going to the movies to watch excellent films. This weekend is also an indisputable example of why movie theatres are the best setting for a shared experience. Cinemas all around the nation would like to express their gratitude and congratulations to our Filmmakers and Studios for constantly pushing the envelope to produce exceptional stories. This weekend demonstrates how strongly films and theatres are returning. In the remaining months of 2023, we anticipate this momentum to continue,” said Kamal Gianchandani, president of the Multiplex Association of India.
