‘Aur kya kya dikhayega yeh World Cup’ – Fans react as Angelo Mathews becomes first player in history to be ‘Timed Out’

Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews scripted history in Delhi with a bizarre unwanted record. The former Sri Lanka captain became the first cricketer in history to get dismissed in the form of Timed Out. The incident took place during the ODI World Cup 2023 match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, November 6.

Mathews had to walk back to the pavilion after Bangladesh skipper Shakib al Hasan appealed for a timed-out. The right-hander walked into the middle after Shakib dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama, who made a 42-ball 41, in the second ball of the 25th over. He took time to enter the field at first and his start was further delayed following an apparent helmet mix-up.

It is learned that the strap of Mathews’ helmet broke as he walked out to bat. While he waited for a new one, Shakib appealed and the batter was given out. The on-field umpires were also not happy with Mathews and had a word or two with him. The 35-year-old could be seen explaining to Shakib what had happened, but the team decided to uphold the decision and there was nothing the umpires could do.

What does the rule book say?

According to the ODI World Cup 2023 Playing Conditions, a batter should be at the crease within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If the new batter fails to reach the designated time, he can be given Timed Out unless the opposing team withdraws the appeal. Bangladesh and captain Shakib refused to accept Mathew’s explanation. This is a first in history and indeed a controversial moment that questions the ‘spirit of cricket’.

“After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out,” the statement says.
