‘At least RCB is winning a case’ – Fans react as Delhi High Court orders ‘Jailer’ movie team to remove scenes showing RCB jersey

The Delhi High Court has ordered the makers of the blockbuster South Indian movie “Jailer” to remove scenes that show the jersey of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The directive, however, will not diminish the success of the movie as ‘Thalaivar’ Rajinikanth’s action-packed film has already smashed box office records by gathering over Rs 500 crore and it is still ruling the theatres worldwide.

The IPL franchise filed a lawsuit as the movie shows a contract killer, who wears the jersey, making insulting and misogynistic remarks about a woman. The Bangalore-based franchise claimed that the negative portrayal of wearing its jersey without authorization could harm its brand value and reputation.

The Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd filed a case against the producers of the movie, which is Sun TV Network Ltd, for using their jersey in a derogatory manner. The case was heard by Justice Prathiba M Singh, who asked the movie team to alter the scene before releasing it on television, satellite or any OTT platform. The court has also ordered to ensure that the jersey is not screened in any theatre from September 1.

Both parties resolved their disputes

Notably, the film had already started premiering in the theatres on August 10. However, the filmmakers and RCB settled their differences, with the former agreeing to ensure that scenes depicting the team jersey are not identifiable as RCB jerseys. They are likely to remove key branding elements and primary colours associated with the RCB jersey.

The franchise was represented by lawyers Shwetasree Majumder, Priya Adlakha, and Vardaan Anand. On the other hand, the Sun group was represented by lawyers Deepak Biswas, Harsh Buch, and Srishti Gupta, according to Livelaw. Meanwhile, it is learned that the court ordered the producers to refund the entire court fee to the opposite party as the case was dismissed in the very first listing.
