‘Aise hi Pakistan ko bhi harado’ – Fans react as England defeat Netherlands by 160 runs in ODI World Cup clash
England registered their 2nd win of the ongoing ODI World Cup after defeating the Netherlands by 180 runs in the 40th match of the tournament at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Wednesday, November 8. With this win, their hope to qualify for the 2025 Championship Trophy is still alive.
Talking about the match, England won the toss and opted to bat first and they got off to a flying start thanks to Dawid Malan who batted superbly for his 87 off 74 balls before being run out. England were 133/1 after 20 overs and placed very strongly, but then they seemed to completely lose their way again, as they’ve done all tournament.
They lost five wickets for 59 runs in what was an all-too-familiar batting collapse that left them in deep trouble. However, it was their star all-rounder Ben Stokes, who came to the rescue. He found a capable ally in Chris Woakes and the two of them put on 129 for the 7th wicket. Importantly, they helped England plunder 124 off the last 10 overs as Stokes went from 50 to 100 in just 20 balls, while Woakes brought up a quickfire fifty and helped the team to achieve a massive total of 339 runs.
Brilliant bowling performance by England
Chasing the target, the Netherlands lost their first 2 wickets inside the first powerplay. However, Wesley Barresi and Sybrand Engelbrecht steadied the ship and stitched a 55-run stand for the 3rd wicket. Just when things were looking settled for the Dutch, Barresi ran out himself and then they started losing wickets at regular intervals of time.
Teja Nidamanuru tried till the end but didn’t get the support from any other batter as the Dutch lost the match by a massive margin of 180 runs. Stokes was named Player of the Match for his brilliant century.
