The 33rd match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 is being played between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, November 2. Asked to bat first, India suffered a huge blow as they lost skipper Rohit Sharma in the 2nd ball of the innings.

However, the formidable partnership of 189 runs between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill elevated the team’s prospects, steadying the ship while maintaining an impressive run rate. However, in an unexpected twist of fate, it seemed like both batsmen were on the verge of scoring centuries, but they fell just short, evoking a blend of emotions among fans.

Kohli, renowned as one of the modern era’s batting maestros, and Gill, a young talent with immense promise, displayed their remarkable skills but couldn’t quite reach the three-figure mark in the match. Kohli missed the chance to equal Sachin Tendulkar’s 49 ODI centuries record

He took 94 balls to play this beautiful knock which included 11 fours. If Kohli had smashed a century, he’d have equalled the record of Sachin Tendulkar’s 49 centuries in ODI cricket which is the highest.

On the other hand, Shubman Gill, with his elegant strokes and flair, provided great support but was also left yearning for a century, as he was dismissed at 92 which came off 92 balls including 11 fours and 2 sixes. The disappointment of falling short of centuries was palpable among fans who had eagerly awaited the two-star batters’ remarkable milestones. 

While their efforts contributed significantly to the team’s total, the missed centuries will definitely hurt both the cricketers. However, fans worldwide will be eagerly watching for the next opportunity when these two talents can raise their bats and celebrate their well-deserved centuries on the grand stage of the World Cup.
