‘Abh kya hoga’- Fans react as Kane Williamson injures his right thumb in ODI World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh
New Zealand beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the third match of their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. In the match, Kane Williamson and Shakib Al Hasan both injured themselves on Friday as their teams met at the group game in Chennai.
Williamson retired hurt after hitting a fine 78 on his return. After seven months out with a knee injury he returned but again a blow to the right thumb forced him off. He will undergo an X-ray of his left thumb on Saturday for further updates.
Shakib seemed to have suffered from cramps and had to undergo scans on his injury after the match. It will be a big blow if he misses the next matches further in the tournament.
Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell shine in Chennai
The Kiwis won the toss and elected to field first. Bangladesh opener, Litton Das went back to the pavilion without scoring. The opener, Tanzid Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz stitched a partnership of 40 runs. They were at one stage, struggling with 56-4. From there Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim built a partnership of 96 runs. Mahmudullah scored 41 runs at the end of the innings making sure that they scored 245/9.
In reply, the Kiwis lost Rachin Ravindra, for only 9 runs. Following that, skipper Kane and Devon Conway put up an 80-run partnership until the latter was removed for 45 runs. Williamson and Daryl Mitchell then combined for 108 runs. The New Zealand captain returned to the pavilion after reaching 78 runs due to thumb problems. Mitchell remained undefeated on 89 off 67 balls, while Tom Latham scored 16 off 11.
At the end of the match, the 33-year-old said, “just got a bit fat and colourful straight away so got a scan tomorrow, but hopefully it’s okay. [on the knee] it’s okay, glad to get through the game from a knee perspective, but from a team perspective it was great as well. I thought the guys in the first half of the performance were excellent. They just banged the wicket hard, it was a bit variable.”

He after scoring half century got retired hurt. Same happened in warm up matches too. Bowlers did not get him out. He himself walked back to pavilion. Williamson experience will be handy for team against big matches like IND, PAK, AUS and in knockouts
