Australia have created history at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19 by defeating India by 6 wickets in the ODI World Cup 2023 final. They lifted the World Cup trophy for the record 6th time. On the other hand, India who were undefeated in the tournament lost the final clash.

Talking about the match, Australian skipper Pat Cummins set the tone by challenging India to bat first and put runs on the scoreboard. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, known for his explosive starts, once again provided a strong foundation, steering the team to a promising start despite the early loss of Shubman Gill. However, a sensational catch by Travis Head saw Rohit departing for 47 runs, shifting the momentum in Australia’s favour.

The Australian bowlers, led by Cummins, capitalised on the breakthrough, restricting India’s scoring opportunities. Shreyas Iyer fell victim to Cummins for a mere 4 runs, and despite a determined partnership between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, Australia continued to tighten their grip on the game. Cummins, with his crucial contributions, silenced the stadium by dismissing Kohli for 54 runs, leaving India struggling to maintain momentum.

Facing a challenging bowling attack, the Indian batters found it difficult to rotate the strike, and the boundaries dried up. The Australian pacers utilised reverse-swing effectively on a slow track, making it even more arduous for the Indian team. Despite the challenges, India managed to post a below-par yet respectable total of 240.

Brilliant batting performance by Travis Head

Chasing the target, Australia smashed 15 runs in the very first over, however, Mohammed Shami took the other new ball instead of Mohammed Siraj and he struck with the second ball of his first over, sending back David Warner. Jasprit Bumrah then got the wicket of Mitchell Marsh. While both bowlers have been expensive, they sent back two of Australia’s most dangerous top-order batters.

Bumrah then sent Steve Smith back to the pavilion on just 4 runs. It looked like the Men in Blue would put more pressure on the Australian batters by picking up wickets at regular intervals of time. But Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne had different things on their mind as they stitched a 192-run stand for the 4th wicket and secured the victory for the Indian team. Head smashed a wonderful century while Labuschagne smashed a half-century.
