As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the ODI World Cup in 2023, the focus is often on traditional powerhouses like India, Australia, and England. However, cricket is a game that thrives on unpredictability, and in every tournament, there are teams that rise from the shadows to make their mark.

In the upcoming World Cup, three teams – Sri Lanka, South Africa, and New Zealand – have the potential to surprise everyone and become formidable contenders. These 3 teams have always performed well in major tournaments like the World Cup but missed multiple opportunities to get their hands on the coveted trophy. However, they would like to break the jinx this time.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, the 1996 World Cup champion, has had its ups and downs in recent years. However, this team boasts a rich cricketing history and has the talent to upset the best. With a mix of young talents and some experienced players, they have the potential to stun their opponents on any given day.

The subcontinent conditions in India may favour their style of play, and they could find themselves in the knockout stages with a bit of luck and consistent performances. They were also brilliant in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023 where they ended as the runner-up.

South Africa

South Africa has often been labelled as the ‘chokers’ in World Cups, but this might be the year they break the jinx. They have a balanced squad with some explosive batters and potent bowlers. Led by Temba Bavuma, they have the potential to go all the way if they handle pressure situations well.

With a spinner like Tabraiz Shamsi in the squad, their bowling looks quite strong. Their brand new wicketkeeper-batting sensation Heinrich Klassen has been in brilliant form. It’d be interesting to see both of these players perform well for the team.

New Zealand

New Zealand, known for its fair play and fighting spirit, has consistently punched above its weight in international cricket. With players like Kane Williamson and Trent Boult, they have the firepower to make a significant impact. Williamson will be in action for the first time after he was injured in IPL 2023.

The Blackcaps were the finalists in the 2019 World Cup where they were defeated by England in a super over thriller in the final. However, this time, they’d like to take the title home with an all-round performance throughout the tournament.
