Former Zimbabwe pacer Henry Olonga, who sparked false rumours about his long-time teammate Heath Streak’s demise, has confirmed that the legendary cricketer is alive. In the early hours of Wednesday (August 23), Olonga tweeted about Streak’s death, but hours later he corrected the mistake and announced to the world that the rumours were ‘greatly exaggerated’.

While there was no official statement from Streak’s family, news of his death went viral after Olonga and current Zimbabwe captain Sean Williams took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their grief. It was reported that Streak had died at the age of 49 after a courageous battle with cancer.

“Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side. RIP @ZimCricketv legend. The greatest all-rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end,” Olonga said in his first tweet.

“Streaky. No words can explain what you and your family have done for mine and many others Our hearts our broken you leave behind a beautiful family and a legacy for us to live up to! You will b missed we love you dearly Rest in peace Streaky,” wrote Williams.

In a sudden turn of events, Olonga took to his Twitter to share a screenshot of his WhatsApp chat with Streak, confirming the rumours as false. “I can confirm that rumours of the demise of Heath Streak have been greatly exaggerated. I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He is very much alive folks.”

Streak is the only Zimbabwean to take 100 Test wickets

Streak is widely regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest cricketers, thanks to his on-field heroics during his 12-year illustrious career. The former Zimbabwe captain has played 65 Tests and 189 ODIs and is the only cricketer to take 100 Test wickets for his country. According to reports, he was undergoing treatment in South Africa after being diagnosed with cancer.
