‘Yeh RCB ka badla hai SRH se’ – Fans react as Daniel Vettori replaces Brian Lara as SRH head coach

Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori will join Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as head coach. He is replacing previous head coach Brian Lara, the official social media handle of the franchise confirmed on Monday, August 7. “As our 2-year association with Brian Lara comes to an end, we bid adieu to him. Thank you for the contributions to the Sunrisers. We wish you all the best for your future endeavours,” SRH said in an official statement. They announced the appointment of Vettori with a special Tweet and wrote, “Kiwi legend Daniel Vettori joins the #OrangeArmy as Head Coach. Welcome, coach!”

Talking of Vettori’s coaching experience, he was previously the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2018 and more recently, he was associated with Australia as the assistant coach of the men’s team. He also had a brief spell as the bowling coach of the Bangladesh national side. Another feather in his franchise experience is his spell as the head coach of Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League. Notably, Vettori helped Nathan Lyon prolong his career with his expert coaching and has unearthed gems with Todd Murphy.

SRH has changed three captains in the last three years

Talking of Vettori, the player, he made his international debut in Test Cricket when he was 18 years old, setting the record for being the youngest player to represent New Zealand. The left-arm spin bowling allrounder became the eighth allrounder to take 300 Test wickets and score 3000 runs. He scored over 4500 runs and registered six centuries as a lower-order batter which is highly remarkable.

Talking of SRH, they have struggled in the bottom half of the standings since three seasons of the IPL, including finishing last in two of the three seasons since 2021. They have experimented with three captains in the three years – David Warner, Kane Williamson, and Aiden Markram. With Vettori’s appointment, they will have changed three coaches as well. The previous two were Brian Lara and Tom Moody.
