On 22 September 2023, Team India were in action at Mohali, Punjab against Australia in the first game of the three-match ODI series. The Men in Blue needed a win to become the new number-one-ranked side in the 50-over format. However, they managed a five-wicket win and hence, became the new number one side in ODIs.
They toppled their arch-rivals Pakistan and gained the top spot. Hence, ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup, India are now the number one-ranked side in all three formats. Meanwhile, the 2011 ODI World Cup champion only became the second side to achieve this feat as South Africa achieved it way back in August 2012. Seeing such an achieve,nt from the team, fans went crazy and shared their views on social media.
Speaking of the match, KL Rahul won the toss and asked the Aussies to bat first. While batting first, they scored 276 runs in 50 overs. For the home side, Mohammed Shami was the star with the ball as he picked up a fifer. Then, in the chase, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav smashed fifties each and won the game with eight balls and five wickets in hand. Shami won the Player of the Match award.
“I think the commitment that the boys showed.” – KL Rahul
During the post-match presentation ceremony, skipper Rahul spoke about the commitment the players showed on the field. He said: “It was as hot as Colombo and really humid. I think the commitment that the boys showed. We were put under pressure in the middle. We started really well with the ball. But the middle overs were tough. We’ve been talking about staying committed for 50 overs and we’ve all been working really hard on our fitness so that’s showing. I went into a tricky situation after keeping for 50 overs, it was tough for the middle order batters starting, but had a good partnership with Surya. We kept talking about hitting good cricket shots.”
