Australia won the first Test of the series against the West Indies by 10 wickets. The home side outplayed the Caribbean side in a match that lasted a little over 2 days and a session. It was a short Test and Australia gained crucial points for the ongoing cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). A collective team effort, particularly with the ball, meant that Australia dominated the visiting side.

Batting first, the West Indies managed to post only 188 runs on the board at the Adelaide Oval. Australia were brilliant throughout the game and ensured that the WI did not make a comeback in the game. Barring Kirk McKenzie and the debutant Shamar Joseph, other batters could not apply themselves in the middle. For Australia, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood claimed 4 wickets each.

Replying to WI’s first innings total, Australia did not bat as well either. However, they scored enough to challenge the visiting side. Travis Head was the pick of the batters who registered a quickfire hundred. In his stay in the middle, the star batter scored 119 runs in just 134 balls, which included twelve fours and three sixes. Usman Khawaja scored 45 runs as well.

Shamar Joseph was impressive with the ball on debut as he claimed a fifer. The talented pacer got the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon. In the 2nd innings, the WI batters collapsed like a pack of cards. Hazlewood ran through the batting of the West Indies with his brilliant spell. The star pacer claimed a fifer and damaged the batting of the WI.

In 14 overs, Josh conceded 35 runs and claimed five wickets including six maiden overs. No batter from WI managed to score more than 30 runs and were dismissed for just 120 runs. The target of 26 runs was chased with ease by the Australian openers. Travis Head won the Player of the Match award for his hundred in the first innings. Australia now have a lead of 1-0 in the series with another Test to go.
