The West Indies Players’ Association and the Cricket West Indies have decided to pay both the men’s and women’s cricketers with equal salaries. In a media release recently, the Cricket Board of the WI announced the same and mentioned an MOU signed among the CWI and the WIPA. The contract of the MOU is for about four years and the players would be paid equally in the period.

West Indies is not the first team to announce equal pay among men’s and women’s cricketers. Teams like South Africa, India, England, and New Zealand have also announced equal pay for their cricketers in recent times. Many feel that it might be a good move to promote women’s cricket which deserved the attention of the fans. The board of the WI confirmed the same recently.

In the dual statement of the respective boards of the team, it was announced that the “Move outlines plans to achieve parity in international and regional match fees, international captain’s allowances, international team prize money and regional individual prize money for all West Indies cricketers by 1st October 2027.” The move is considered to be historic by the board of the WI.

The step reflects our unwavering commitment to gender equality – President of WICB

In their statement, Dr Kishore Shallow, the President of the WICB, claimed that it is a significant step towards ensuring a progressive framework in cricket. He added that the move of the WI board reflects the commitment towards treating the men’s and women’s cricketers as nearly the same. Kishore added that the board recognizes the female cricketers of the West Indies by doing so. The move comes following the announcement from the board of New Zealand last year.

“This is a historic day for West Indies cricket. As we overhaul the compensation structures and align performance grading, we are taking a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and progressive cricket framework. This step reflects our unwavering commitment to gender equality and acknowledges the immense contributions of female players to West Indies cricket,” the President of Cricket West Indies said.
