WATCH: Joe Root’s mind-boggling catch to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne during 5th Test of Ashes 2023
On 27 July 2023, the fifth and final Test of the ongoing Ashes series began at the Oval. However, Australia finished day one on high as they bundled out England for 283 runs in their first innings in 54.4 overs. In reply, the Aussies finished the day with 61 runs for one wicket in 25 overs.
Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja were the overnight batters. But, on day two, during the first session, Labuschagne added just seven runs to his overnight score before getting out to Mark Wood. But, the video of the dismissal went viral as Joe Root took an outrageous catch to complete it.

Marnus Labuschagne scored just nine runs in the first innings
Speaking of the video, it took place on the fifth delivery of the 43rd over. The Aussie batter went for defence but all he managed, was an edge that flew to the slips. Root reacted quickly and dispute the ball being behind him at the first slip, he managed to grab that with one hand. Seeing that blinder, fans went crazy and Labuschagne got out after scoring nine runs off 82 balls. Speaking of the match, the Aussie skipper, Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl. Mitchell Starc was the star as he took four wickets.
Along with him, both Todd Murphy and Josh Hazlewood took two wickets each while both Cummins and Mitchell Marsh grabbed one wicket each. For the home side, Harry Brook showed some fight as he scored 85 runs off 91 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes. In reply, Warner failed on another occasion as David Warner scored 24 runs off 52 balls, including three fours. At the end of the morning session on day two, the Aussies reached 115 runs for two wickets. Khawaja remained not out on 47 runs while Steve Smith was also not out on just 13 runs. They are still trailing by 168 runs while both Chris Woakes and Mark Wood grabbed one wicket so far.
