WATCH: Indian players surprised as ‘Best Fielder Award’ winner gets announced via Spider Cam
In the 21st game of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, table-toppers, India and New Zealand locked horns in Dharamshala. Ahead of the game, the home side was looking for their first win against the Blackcaps in World Events after 2003. They had a great start as Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket each in the powerplay. The two-time winners could have had 40/3 if not for Ravindra Jadeja dropping Rachin Ravindra.
Notably, the former won the Best Fielder Award after the Bangladesh game. Meanwhile, Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell (130) put together 159 runs for the third wicket. However, after this partnership was broken, the two-time finalists lost their last seven wickets for 95 runs. For India, Shami took a fifer.
In reply, the Men In Blue had a great start with skipper Rohit Sharma (46) and Shubman Gill (26) putting together 71 runs for the first wicket. However, with the likes of Sharma, Gill, and KL Rahul (33) not converting and Suryakumar Yadav (2) getting run out, the team was in trouble at 191/5. At this stage, former India skipper Virat Kohli (95) and Jadeja (39*) put together 78 runs for the sixth wicket.
The former missed his 49th ODI hundred when the team needed five runs to win. However, by then, the game was in the bag for the former champions. After the game, once again, the Best Fielder Award was presented to one of the Indian players. This time around, the award was hanging on the Spider-Cam, used for the broadcast of the game. Shreyas Iyer who took the catch of Devon Conway, won the award.
Notably, the former made a gesture after taking the catch. Little did he know that he would win the award.
