David Warner revealed the toughest bowler he faced in Test cricket. The star batter who announced his retirement from ODIs earlier today, claimed Dale Steyn to be the toughest bowler he has ever faced in the longest format of the game. Warner recalled an incident where he found it extremely difficult to bat against Steyn along with Shaun Marsh at WACA in 2016/17.

“Without doubt it’s Dale Steyn. I go back to the WACA (the first Test of the 2016-17 home series against South Africa) when me and Shaun Marsh had to go out for an ugly 45-minute session,” said Warner when asked in the pre match conference ahead of the Sydney Test against Pakistan. Warner revealed the interesting conversation he had with his partner Marsh in the match.

Warner added that Marsh had come to him and discussed the way to counter Steyn as the ball was bouncing way too higher and it was nearly impossible to pull the pacer. “Shaun came down to me and said, ‘I can’t pull him, so I don’t know how we’re going to go about facing him’. He put me on my backside, and I think he broke his shoulder as well that game,” added Warner.

Warner added that Marsh got hit on the shoulder in the match. The Southpaw then compared Steyn’s skills with that of his fellow teammate Mitchell Starc. “He’s a fierce competitor who swung the ball back into the left-hander, which is similar to Mitchell Starc swinging the ball back into the right-hander at pace,” said Warner as he praised Steyn.

Warner called Steyn a ‘Fiery Customer’ and compared his outswinger to that of Starc’s outswinger. Warner said that Steyn was a difficult customer to deal with and claimed that he never smiled, neither gave an inch nor a sniff on the field. “He was always a fiery customer who never gave you a smile and never gave you an inch or a sniff on the field,” added the Australian star batter.
