Versatile Bollywood actress Jaya Prada sentenced to six months of Prison alongside INR 5000 fine

Bollywood veteran Jaya Prada has moved into legal trouble. While she gave up on her acting career back in 1994 to focus on politics, she gets into trouble for neither of these two professions. Rather, her commercial ventures are driving her into legal trouble. One of the most sought-after heroines of the 70s and 80s, Jaya is often remembered for her versatile performances on the silver screen. She was sentenced to six months of prison and a fine of INR 5000 on Friday by the Egmore metropolitan magistrate court of Chennai.

According to reports, she owned a theatre along with her business partners Ram Kumar and Raja Babu. The sentence comes as a result of a case lodged against the trio by the Labour Government Insurance Corporation. The theatre incurred losses and had to be shut. As such, their former employee accused them of non-payment of the Employee’s State Insurance (ESI) deducted from their salaries. They also added that the ESI deducted from their salaries was not even paid to the concerned government department.

Jaya Prada admitted to her charges and even offered a settlement

As per media reports, the 61-year-old actress admitted to her charges and promised to clear all dues. She appealed for dismissal of the case but the court rejected her appeal and sentenced her to six months of prison and a fine of INR 5000. However, Jaya’s legal team is yet to provide a notice on the matter.

Talking about her professional commitments, Jaya made a name for herself by working in movies across the country. She appeared in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, and even Marathi films. Jaya joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1994 after quitting her acting career. She was nominated to the Rajya Sabha representing Andhra Pradesh. Later, she left TDP to join Samajwadi Party. She won the Lok Sabha elections contesting from Rampur and remained and Member of the Parliament from 2004 to 2014. Her latest change in political career was when she joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019.
